AZ-802 — Administering Windows Server

The single Windows Server exam that replaced the AZ-800 and AZ-801 pair — core administration, security, storage and troubleshooting.

Is this exam for you?

Who takes AZ-802

Windows Server administrators. One exam now, where the hybrid pair used to be two. Earns the Windows Server Administrator Associate certification.

Level: Intermediate · Official credential: Administering Windows Server

About the course

What AZ-802 actually covers

AZ-800 and AZ-801 both retired on 30 September 2026 and this is what replaced them: one exam, seven weighted areas. Active Directory carries the largest single share, then storage and file services and troubleshooting, with hybrid management, virtual machines, networking and security filling the rest. Broader than either of the old pair, and shallower than both of them combined.

Assumed knowledge: Real Windows Server administration experience plus familiarity with Azure fundamentals.

The problems it answers

Why people in this role end up sitting AZ-802

  1. Holders of AZ-800 or AZ-801 asking what the retirement means for them.
  2. A domain built years ago that everything depends on and nobody wants to touch.
  3. Hybrid identity working by accident, with no one certain quite how.
  4. Windows Server skills that stopped being refreshed several versions ago.
  5. A data centre that is staying, in an organisation whose training budget assumes it is not.

For training partners

Selling AZ-802

Everything a partner needs to put this course in front of the right customer. Lift any of it straight into a proposal.

“The two Windows Server exams retired in September. This is the one course that now covers both, and their certified people need to know.”

When to bring it up

  • Staff holding AZ-800 or AZ-801 and asking what happens next.
  • A hybrid estate with no plan to be fully cloud any time soon.
  • An Active Directory nobody wants to modify.
  • A Windows Server end-of-support date approaching.
  • Training plans still budgeting for the retired two-course path.

Who signs: Infrastructure manager. The retirement itself is the reason to call.
Who attends: Windows Server administrators, including long-serving ones who never certified.

What to sell next

  • AZ-104 for the Azure half of the hybrid estate
  • AZ-700 when the site-to-site connectivity is the problem
  • SC-500 for the security layer around it
  • An Active Directory health check delivered alongside

Pushbacks you will hear

And a straight answer for each

We already sent people on AZ-800 and AZ-801.

Then they have the knowledge and a retired certification. Worth checking whether the credential matters to them commercially before selling the replacement.

We are moving to the cloud, Windows Server is legacy.

Almost nobody finishes that journey. The hybrid period lasts years and this is the course about managing it.

Is five days not a lot for one exam?

It replaced two four-day courses, so it is a consolidation rather than an expansion. Seven weighted areas is genuinely a week.

Why should we trust this one will not retire too?

Fair question. It is brand new, which is exactly why it is the safe one to train against right now.
